Hot Weather Heading Our Way; Tips for Staying Healthy and Safe

Excessive heat is projected to return in Clatsop County this weekend and extend into next week for inland communities. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for Monday, August 14 through Thursday, August 17.

The heat risk for Clatsop County has increased for Sunday, August 13, and Monday, August 14, with major heat risk predicted for a significant portion of the county. This level of heat affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration.

“We encourage people to drink lots of water before the weekend so our bodies are hydrated and can better handle hotter temperatures. This is also a good time to check on friends, neighbors and loved ones to make sure they have ways to stay cool,” said Justin Gibbs, emergency management director.

Although extreme heat is not expected, Clatsop County Departments of Public Health and Emergency Management encourage individuals to make it a habit to use the HeatRisk Prototype tool created by the National Weather Service. The HeatRisk Prototype is a color-numeric-based index that provides a forecast risk of heat-related impacts to occur over a 24-hour period.

Storm Watchers Scoop Up Cats and Dogs During Purrfect Storm at Clatsop Animal Shelter

Eleven Clatsop County animals have been adopted during the first week of the Raining Cats and Dogs Pet Adoption Campaign.

“The community response to this campaign has warmed our hearts,” said Justin Dersham, Clatsop County Animal Control Supervisor. Local storm watchers have come in and scooped up four cats and seven dogs.

“Looking out from Meowgler Bridge we can see that this unique weather pattern of raining cats and dogs weather is still with us. That means we need more people to adopt animals,” he said.

Right now, 60 animals are looking for a new home. Fifty-five are in the Clatsop County Animal Shelter and the rest are waiting in foster homes for their new owners.

Clatsop County Animal Shelter and Clatsop Animal Assistance created The Raining Cats and Dogs Pet Adoption Campaign to raise public awareness about the urgent need for pet adoptions and to help these cats and dogs find good homes over the next few weeks.

A Barkometer has been created to keep the community informed about the pressures the shelter is weathering. It will be regularly updated on social media and the Clatsop County website. Individuals adopting pets during this campaign will receive a Stormer t-shirt as a thank you.

Adoption fees for dogs and cats include spay/neuter fees, vaccinations and other costs. For more information on how to adopt a shelter animal, visit ClatsopCounty.gov.

Clatsop County Senior Sheriff Deputy Chance Moore and Sergeant Nate Baldwin will share their experiences saving lives by reversing an overdose with naloxone.
